Summary: Named after William Preston Few, Duke University’s first president, the Few Quad Dorm Renovations encompass a complex of 450 rooms in buildings that date to 1933. Working closely with full-service architecture and engineering firm Clark Nexsen, Berg has been able to keep the project on course by conducting weekly on-site meetings with design staff to quickly resolve any issues that arise in the field.
The Raleigh-Durham prefabrication department made significant contributions as well – “meeting an accelerated seven-month schedule for 167,000 square feet of complex renovations would have been next to impossible without them,” stated Berg Superintendent Van Smailes. Creating prefabricated outlet boxes, receptacles and fixture whips in advance, rather than attempting to assemble these fundamental parts on site, has allowed Berg to take advantage of cost savings and the duplicative nature of the dormitory rooms.
