Summary: Bergelectric’s work on the network information centers offers a model for high-speed data transmission and state-of-the-art power distribution systems. Where “normal” office buildings provide for 20 to 30 watts of electric power per square foot, these centers call for as much as 250 watts. Redundant power systems assure unfaltering service to the telecommunications company’s customers.

Power enters two utility-company switching stations at 34,500 volts, which distributes the power into two transformers that deliver 13,200-volt service to the building’s main switchgear lineup. The switchgear lineup serves six substations, each with a dry-type transformer that delivers 480-volt power to the equipment in the building.

Dual high-voltage power feeds serve the building, with each feed coming from a separate local source. Both power sources are live and in use at all times. An interlock system enables the building load to be switched from one source to the other in case of service needs or a power outage on one of the sources.
