P-1400 MC Energy Initiative Camp Lejeune

Location: Camp Lejeune, NC
General Contractor: RQ-Bergelectric Joint Venture
Electrical Value: $10.4 Million

Summary: Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic has embarked on a $45.4-million energy conservation endeavor, under prime contractor URS-IAP, LLC World Services, which will install approximately 20,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at eight sites across Camp Lejeune.

The Bergelectric-RQ Joint Venture is specifically targeting the use of renewable energy technology that will reduce the base’s dependence on non-green sources and make Camp Lejeune less vulnerable to power outages. The majority of PV panel sites will utilize standard ground-mounted arrays, but a few of the sites near bachelor-enlisted quarters (BEQs) will feature carport-mounted arrays.

Of specific note, however, is the French Creek BEQ location, which is the site of a former landfill. “Due to soils conditions, our crews will be installing ballasted arrays that do not require concrete footings,” explained Bergelectric Project Manager Rob Ford.
