Summary: The new 1,000-cell prison in Tabor City , North Carolina , marks the sixth prison that Centex has built with the North Carolina Department of Corrections (NC DOC ). It also marks the second NC DOC endeavor that Berg has taken on with this top-notch team. The design-development phase was overseen by North Carolina-based architects Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce and opened at full capacity in 2008.
The $94-million Tabor City project encompasses 535,000-s.f. – including inmate cells, dayrooms, control rooms, administrative offices, a central energy plant and recreational facilities. Berg installed electrical systems designed by engineer O’Brien Atkins. Over the course of the two-year project, Berg installed the emergency generator set and paralleling switchgear, a telecommunications system, PBX system, laser-detection fire-alarm/life-safety system and cable-TV system.
