A Secure Healthcare Facility in Coalinga, CA

Coalinga State Hospital (Secure Treatment Facility) is one of Bergelectric’s biggest completed project to date. This very sizeable electrical contract/project is a state psychiatric hospital for repeat sexual offenders. The Coalinga State Hospital is a maximum security,1,500-bed Acute Care facility located at the edge of the Coastal Mountain Range in the city of Coalinga, California.

Designed by Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz, general contractor Hensel Phelps Construction undertook the 1.2-million square foot project on its 320-acre site. Bergelectric teamed up with Ted Jacobs
Engineering Group to provide the 45 one-and two-story buildings with a central plant, site infrastructure consisting of 12 and 5kv electrical and communications distribution and, and four 5kv diesel generators. Special systems include voice/data, fire-alarm and SCADA systems. The project had an astounding 15,000 light fixtures installed.

According to Bergelectric Project Manager Matt Ordway, the project had a very sophisticated Power Management & Control System integrated into the switchgear and networked via fiber optic backbone. The main portion of the Coalinga State Hospital was a combination of hospital/healthcare construction and detention construction with high- end architectural finishes. This Secure Treatment Facility contained numerous systems that required unprecedented trade coordination and scheduling, making it unusually complex.
