The Hospital of the Future Comes To San Diego
The new Palomar Medical Center was dubbed “The Hospital of the Future” for its many cutting edge features.
The owner’s intentions were to create not only a healing environment for patients, but one that also supports the well-being of the staff through features such as skylights and light wells that deliver natural lighting throughout the facility.
With the IPD approach, Bergelectric, along with all the construction trades on Palomar Medical Center, were fully vested in the agreements, processes and collaborative problem-solving, working together like one big company instead of a bunch of individual trades looking out for themselves. This ‘team’ started well in advance of the design and construction efforts with an integrated team that bought into a shared process at the onset and was unified in its objectives from day one.
Bergelectric took Building Information Modeling (BIM) to its next level of productivity at PMC—enhancing capabilities by precisely managing material ordering, inventory and delivery. Through the creation of detailed material takeoffs during the preconstruction phase of Palomar Medical Center, which identified exact components required at pre-designated areas for “just-in-time” delivery as materials were needed in the field.
Palomar Health’s adoption of the CBC 2007 Special Seismic Certification requirements and standards created an unusual challenge for our team. Bergelectric had to schedule all of their major equipment (switchgear, substation, panels, switchboards, XFMRS, generators, ATSs, paralleling switchgear, lighting inverters, UPSs, etc.) to be shake-table tested for seismic sustainability.
