Bergelectric, in collaboration with general contractor Rudolph & Sletten, is making significant strides at the Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital in Marina Del Rey, California. The construction of a new nine-story medical building aims to enhance and expand the hospital’s longstanding reputation for excellence in surgery and emergency services. This ambitious project is being carried out while the existing hospital operates at full capacity, showcasing the commitment to serving the community without interruption.
The design of the building thoughtfully integrates elements of the marina’s natural environment, featuring a unique façade with differently colored glass that creates a visual effect of gentle waves. This aesthetic carries into the lobby, where a grand staircase seamlessly guides visitors to the surgical waiting area. Ample large windows will flood the interiors with natural light, promoting both comfort and easily navigable spaces throughout the higher floors of the hospital.
Emphasizing sustainability, the owners prioritized eco-friendly construction practices. The electrical features include state-of-the-art energy-efficient systems designed to minimize energy consumption and support the building’s green initiatives. Alongside these, outdoor spaces are being developed for patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring ample opportunities for relaxation and connection with nature. The building will optimize daylight while reducing solar heat gain and glare, culminating in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy usage. Additionally, landscaping plans incorporate native plant species, contributing to water conservation efforts by minimizing irrigation needs.
Beyond the hospital tower, Bergelectric has also constructed a new two-story central energy plant to meet the increased energy demands of the facility. This central energy plant includes a new medium-voltage substation equipped with paralleling gear and distribution systems, along with two generators and automatic transfer switches (ATS) prepared for a potential third generator.
“Building this replacement hospital and creating a new campus from scratch is a dream come true for an architect,” said Zeke Triana, AIA, vice president of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction at Cedars-Sinai. “By the time we’re done, the community will have the beautiful, world-class hospital it deserves,” signifying the transformative impact this project will have on the region.
