The Solterra Cascada project, located at 1150 NE Alberta St in Portland, Oregon, is set to become a hub of relaxation and wellness, featuring a hotel, spa,
restaurant, hot yoga studio, gym, and coffee shop. As the construction of this multifaceted facility progressed, Bergelectric has been tasked with executing the intricate electrical installations that will support its diverse functionalities. At the peak of the project, Bergelectric’s skilled team comprised 12 electricians along with one foreman overseeing the operations. This level of manpower was essential for handling the unique challenges posed by the project. One standout feature of the Solterra Cascada will be its impressive miles of LED strip lights installed both externally and internally, which not only embellish the space aesthetically but also contribute to energy efficiency.
In addition to the decorative lighting, Bergelectric installed multiple grow lights to support the venue’s greenery. Each unit within the project features a dedicated lighting control system independent of the common areas, further enhancing customization. Notable design elements include a stunning 55-foot custom chandelier and a rooftop generator, showcasing the project’s commitment to both beauty and functionality.
The Solterra Cascada project is pursuing LEED certification, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. Key features contributing to this goal include advanced lighting controls, photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS), variable frequency drives (VFDs) on all equipment, and a rainwater recirculating system integrated into a building management system (BMS) back-net. Building Information Modeling (BIM) played a critical role in the construction process, facilitating the coordination of various systems within a limited space. The compact design of the building, combined with the abundance of equipment, made BIM essential for ensuring proper fit and functionality of all components.
Throughout the project, Bergelectric navigated several challenges, especially with the installation of LED lights alongside the custom finishes. As the design evolved in a collaborative manner during construction, the general contractor— also serving as the project owner—played a key role in shaping the process, which added some complexity but also contributed to the project’s unique character. Adapting to changes from the original drawings added both challenges and opportunities for creative problem solving.
Innovative practices were also employed, such as the use of mobile material carts, Trimble Total Station, and leveraging prefabrication capabilities for various systems. These practices contributed significantly to the efficiency and effectiveness of the installation process.
In addition to standard electrical work, Bergelectric’s team also installed a fire alarm system, ensuring the safety and security of the future patrons of
Solterra Cascada. The project has upheld an impeccable safety record, with zero recordable incidents reported, underscoring Bergelectric’s commitment to workplace safety. With an impressive 39,000 linear feet of wire installed and over 90,000 linear feet of LED strip lights incorporated into the design, along with more than 1,000 switches and outlets, the electrical installation at Solterra Cascada is a testament to Bergelectric’s expertise and dedication to quality.
Now fully operational, the Solterra Cascada has recently secured the third position in Travel & Leisure’s list of Best New Affordable Luxury Hotels in the world. It is rapidly becoming a landmark destination in Portland, embodying a harmonious blend of innovative design, sustainability, and the expert craftsmanship of Bergelectric’s dedicated team.
